The Greensboro Free Library is a welcoming place for children and families to read, play, make, and connect. Our programs support early literacy, creativity, and curiosity while giving families a friendly community space to spend time together.

Programs are free and open to the public unless noted. For the most up to date schedule, please visit our Library Calendar.

Children and Families

Regular Programs

Storytime (Ages 0 to 6)

A relaxed and playful storytime for young children and their caregivers. We share stories, songs, movement, and simple activities that support early literacy and help little ones build a love of books.

Storytime is designed to be welcoming for all families. Wiggles and giggles are part of the fun.

Learning at the Library
(Ages 7 to 12)

A hands on program for elementary age children with stories, games, conversation, and creative projects. This program is especially popular with homeschool families, but all children are welcome.

Each session is designed to encourage curiosity, connection, and shared learning. Themes change throughout the year and may include seasonal topics, science and nature, art, community helpers, and local history.

Special Family Events

Throughout the year, we occasionally host one time events that are designed for the whole family. These may include seasonal celebrations and creative projects.

Examples of past events include:

  • Family game nights

  • Winter and holiday crafts

  • Community celebrations and special guest programs

  • Pumpkin carving and fall festivities

Makerspace for Kids and Families

Families are welcome to use the library’s Makerspace any time the library is open. The Makerspace is an informal, low-pressure space where children and caregivers can explore creativity, problem-solving, and hands-on learning together.

Materials and activities may include:

  • Arts and crafts supplies, cardboard, paper, and reusable materials

  • Tape, scissors, basic tools, and hot glue with adult supervision

  • Blocks, LEGOs, Snap Circuits, Turing Tumble, and other open-ended building tools

  • Dress-up and children’s costumes available to borrow

  • Activity kits to check out, including kits focused on earthquakes, volcanoes, the solar system, and other science topics

  • Seasonal prompts and simple project ideas for a range of ages

There is no set outcome or expectation - families are encouraged to experiment, build, and make at their own pace.

Outdoor Library Space

Behind the library, families can also enjoy our outdoor library space during the warmer months. This area offers room to move, play, and gather, and is often used alongside library programs or for informal family time.

The outdoor space may include:

  • A large tent for shade, programs, or sitting together

  • A sandbox and play kitchen

  • A play boat and garden area

  • Space for games, reading, or taking a break outside

The outdoor space is available for casual use during open hours and may also be used for programs, snacks, or quiet time in the fresh air.
