ILL FAQ’s
-
Most requests arrive within one to two weeks, though some may take longer depending on availability and the lending library.
The courier typically delivers to our library every Thursday. During holiday weeks, deliveries may be rescheduled or cancelled. -
To help ensure equitable access, patrons may have up to three interlibrary loan requests at a time.
-
Sometimes. Many libraries do not lend newly published or high demand titles. Newer books are often unavailable for interlibrary loan until several months after publication.
-
Not always. Availability depends on lending libraries, and some items may not be available to borrow. If a request cannot be filled, staff are happy to help suggest alternatives. -
Requests can be made through the online form, by phone, or in person at the library.
-
Interlibrary Loan is free for patrons.
However, it is not free for the library. Most in state requests are delivered through Vermont’s library courier system, which is supported by grant funding.
Some materials come from out of state and are shipped through USPS. In those cases, the library covers postage costs through our Interlibrary Loan budget.
We are grateful to frequent users who occasionally make donations to help offset these expenses and keep the service available to everyone.
The Interlibrary loan service is made possible in part by federal funding from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) through the Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA). We are grateful for this financial support which helps to cover the cost of courier services to securely move books between libraries and allows GFL patrons to access a greater depth and breadth of materials. For full details regarding this service, please see our Interlibrary Loan Policy or contact the library if you have questions.
