Temporary Library Assistant
The Greensboro Free Library is seeking a temporary Library Assistant to help support library services while a staff member is on maternity leave.
As a small community library, we serve residents and visitors of Greensboro and the surrounding Northeast Kingdom.
This temporary position runs from April through mid July for up to 20 hours per week. The schedule will generally fall between Tuesday and Friday, with occasional weekend coverage if there is a program or needed desk coverage. Some flexibility in scheduling is possible.
The Library Assistant will help support daily library operations and assist with some responsibilities typically handled by the Library Services Librarian, including patron support, interlibrary loan services, and program assistance. This role works closely with a small library staff and volunteers to support daily services and programs.
Position Details
Temporary position from April through July
Up to 20 hours per week
Generally Tuesday through Friday with occasional weekend coverage
Pay range $17 to $19 per hour depending on experience
Responsibilities
Responsibilities may include:
• Assisting patrons at the circulation desk
• Checking materials in and out and shelving library materials
• Helping manage interlibrary loan requests and processing incoming materials
• Assisting with setup, preparation, and support for library programs
• Answering phones and responding to general patron questions
• Helping maintain a welcoming and organized library environment
Ideal Candidates
Ideal candidates will:
• Enjoy working with the public
• Be organized, dependable, and able to work independently in a small, collaborative environment
• Be comfortable using computers and everyday technology
• Have experience with tools such as Google Docs or similar platforms
• Be willing to learn and navigate new systems, including library databases and basic website updates
Candidates with experience or interest in communications, simple design tools, or digital content may also have opportunities to assist with promotional materials and online updates.
Applicants should be comfortable with the physical aspects of library work, including standing for periods of time, shelving materials, bending, and light lifting.
Previous library or customer service experience is helpful but not required.
Training will be provided for library systems and procedures. We welcome applications from community members who are curious, reliable, and interested in learning about library work.
